![]() It’s easy to look at your own designs and imagine them utilized how you intend them to be, but more often than not there will be things far beyond what you think are possible that can be done with them. When making cards it’s important not only from your own perspective, but from that of all varieties of players. This shows that Golos was not designed to intentionally fuel the explosive combo decks he ended up helming, but was instead meant to be a simple and effective commander for players trying to edge into the format. Specifically he says “As more and more players are playing Commander, we're trying to make sure that every set has some tools for the format.” and “Golos was designed as a simple five-color Commander that helps your mana, something most five-color Commander decks need.” In the 2019 article “ What Core Can I Say - Part 1” Mark Rosewater discusses the creation of Golos. So what lessons can we as designers take away from all this?įor my money, the most important lesson here is that players won’t always do what you expect them to with the pieces you give them. This isn’t to say there aren’t degenerate Sisay builds too of course, but it seems people are more willing to innovate with Sisay. Golos on the other hand tends to always be some variety of five color “Every combo piece I own” or “Good stuff”. The builds I’ve seen most often helmed by Sisay are vorthos style theme decks, shrines (Prior to Go-Shintai), and Background tribal. My working theory on this is that where Sisay guides the deck brewer in a vague direction, Golos is a blank slate on which anything can be applied. So why is that when both have similar power ceilings and support unusual strategies? Golos and Sisay are both extremely powerful commanders in a vacuum, but only one of them is currently banned in the format. To truly show the duality of utility though, let’s take our next two side by side. You’ll find a myriad of combo decks featuring tribes like Slivers and Elementals, but you’ll also find everything from Zuberas to Mercenaries. For examples of this just scroll through some Morophon decks on Moxfield. While it is undeniably a powerful card, it also supports weaker themes that are likely to never get any direct support from WotC. Morophon represents the middle of the scale here. Take our first of the three cards we’ll discus today for example Pet cards, unusual strategies, and completely janky themes are an integral part of what makes EDH the special beast that it is! But this is also where the duality of utility and intention comes into play. It’s an aspect of the game somewhat lost in more competitive, meta-driven, formats but something that thrives in EDH. This is an important part of Magic as a game, the concept of decks representing their pilots. Magic players are wild people who will make decks whether or not there is any official support for them. To start, let's get the framework established. These three cards are Morophon, Golos and Sisay from Modern Horizons To do this, let’s take a look at three different cards that are all meant to fill similar roles, and while each succeeds, they do so to varying degrees that change their reception and usage to insane degrees. This article will be using EDH as its reference point, but the lessons apply to all formats. This month I want to discuss two of the subtler parts of Magic design that highlight the tricky balance we have to strike as designers Utility and Player Intention. ![]() I hope you’ll all stick with us through that change. I’ll still write the occasional lore or general topic article, but CCC will mainly now be about design. I want to focus more on the design aspects of Magic, concepts and ideas that will help us all in our journey to create the best Magic cards we can. Before getting into this month’s article I want to quickly discuss a small change to CCC.įor most of CCC’s time it’s sort of been my place to write about whatever MTG thing caught my fancy that month, but I’d like to give it a more consistent tone starting from here forward. ![]() As always I’m East2West, and this is Coast to Coast Casual. The small zodiac boat was also nice because we only had 10 people on the boat (during the height of Omicron capacity of 14) and were able to dock at the outer edge of the crater where the underwater scape, sea life, and water were more interesting. It was a smooth but fast ride for anyone who has sea sickness. It only took about 15 minutes to get from Makena to the crater, so you don’t waste time and get to enjoy the water and snorkeling. We absolutely loved this snorkeling trip! We took the 9:30am departure, which worked out very nicely, because we didn’t have to get up early, and the large boats left shortly as we arrived Molokini, so it was very peaceful and uncrowded. It was very pleasant and fun but then on the way back we got drenched again with the spray. ![]() We finally went to our last spot and saw turtles. Nothing to see and super wavy/almost a bit scary. The waves were questionable so we went to another nearby spot and got in. We then got drenched on the way to our third spot- it was freezing and salt water was all over us and my 10 year old was freezing. We went to our first spot, didn’t see a huge variety of fish. Music selection was awesome but so loud, because speakers were at the back of the boat. We had been told the back of the boat was the calmest so we sat there. No acknowledgment that we had talked about wanting one which was odd. Fast forward…we boarded the boat and we’re on the way and asked for the wetsuit and were told that they are on the truck. Nothing further was discussed regarding the wetsuit, but we made it very clear that we’d like one. We wholeheartedly agreed that we’d like a wetsuit. ![]() Our captain mentioned that wet suits were available and he specifically said to us that our ten year old daughter should use one as she’s young and may get cold. We met up at the boat and signed all paperwork and got a brief description of what to expect on our trip. My husband and I decided that our next visit will be when the whales are here and we’ll make sure that we will go with Redline to experience the majestic whales. Based on this experience, we will continue to choose Redline Rafting for our Maui snorkeling excursions. The kids were surprisingly eager to get in the water and they had no trouble with the gear! We all marveled at the number of fish that we saw at Molikini and the snorkeling with the turtles was the BEST!! Tim and Sean were so much fun and the kids loved sitting in the front of the boat for the adventure. We each had someone to snorkel with and they gave us the boundaries of where to stay to be safe. They helped everyone prepare for getting into the ocean and made sure that they were comfortable in the water. Safety was the beginning of the trip and then we learned about the various islands and the fish that we were going to see. They enjoyed the fast ride with the raft and the staff was so good with them. This year we had 3 teens with us and they had never snorkeled in the ocean. What a fun ride! We go snorkeling with Redline Rafting every time we visit Maui. They look for him at the school's annual Halloween party "Romp the Swamp". The solution turns out to be too complex for either Cleo or George to understand, and they need Carter, a governor's scholar, to analyze the results. Using her invisibility, Molly manages to scare him out, allowing Cleo and George to enter and duplicate Cleo's original experiment. When they arrive at school and meet George, they realize they need to get past the security guard. Cleo clarifies to Molly that her "light" is about more than popularity. While in transit, Molly tells Cleo she understands her feeling invisible, but she also envies Cleo's genius, as she knows her popularity is fleeting. After Molly secures a moth for the experiment, the sisters take a trolley to school. ![]() In apologizing, Cleo admits to admiring Molly's "light" and is jealous because her not sharing in it makes her feel invisible. While in the cemetery, Molly's frustration over her invisibility mounts, leading to a heated argument with Cleo. The sisters go to a cemetery to catch another moth while George goes to school to set up. Upon observing Molly's cells under the microscope, Cleo and George conclude that her invisibility will become permanent unless they can formulate an antidote before midnight, twenty-four hours after Molly swallowed the moth, so they need to reproduce the results from Cleo's earlier experiment. Later in the lacrosse game, Cleo has a rough start but slowly gets into the game with Molly's help, resulting in a victory for the team. Things get complicated when George finds out Molly's invisibility, and her boyfriend Coug ( Austin Fryberger) questions why she is constantly avoiding him. ![]() In the process, Molly hears Carter ( Will Meyers), a boy Cleo likes, talking with George ( Karan Brar) about Cleo she manages to secure a date for her sister by pretending to be her and asking Carter out. Cleo attends the pep circle for the lacrosse team while Molly grabs a microscope from the science classroom so Cleo can figure out how to make her visible again. As it is Halloween, she decides to wear her costume to mask her invisibility, but when the costume also turns invisible, Molly has Cleo wear the costume and pretend to be her at school. She must attend school to participate in the season opener for her lacrosse team, which college scouts will be watching. The next morning, Molly is horrified when she cannot see herself and discovers the reason from Cleo. The moth flies to close to the light, gets killed by it and falls into a cup of water containing an antacid Molly is about to drink, and she unknowingly consumes the moth which renders her invisible. Later, while Molly is preparing for bed, the moth returns, attracted to the light from the bathroom. The steam produced ends up turning the moth invisible, leading Cleo to chase it around the house, full of guests, before it gets away. As she works on the experiment at home, while Molly hosts a dinner for her lacrosse team, a moth flies by and distracts Cleo, causing her to accidentally spill unknown chemicals into her solution. Perkins ( Alex Désert), sees her potential in science and decides she needs a challenge for her class project she is to determine a mystery substance and transform it into its crystal state. Although Cleo is hardly noticed compared to her sister, she is an excellent student, but is introverted and somewhat sarcastic and cynical. “Girl Meets World” was nominated for an Emmy for outstanding children’s program.Cleo ( Rowan Blanchard) is a teenage girl living in the shadow of her older sister, Molly ( Paris Berelc), whose popularity gets her recognized by everyone at school. The cast is rounded out by Rachel Crow (“The X Factor”), who will play Molly’s best friend and teammate newcomer Austin Fryberger as Molly’s boyfriend Will Meyers (“Bella and the Bulldogs”) as Cleo’s crush and Alex Désert (“The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes”) as the high school science teacher. ![]() The TV movie also stars another familiar Disney face, Karan Brar - the “Jessie” alum and “Bunk’d” regular will play Cleo’s best friend and fellow science whiz kid George. Blanchard plays Cleo, and co-stars with fellow Disney actress Paris Berelc (“Mighty Med”), who plays her sister. Her more normal state is more brooding and withdrawn, partially fed by her fears about David dying and her fears about Arasaka turning him into a lab rat later on when she learns about the info they have on him about halfway through the series. But this turns out to largely be an act to get on David's good side. In Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Lucy puts on an air of this during their initial meetings, particularly when she rides the stretcher David is on out of the back of a moving ambulance into traffic while laughing her head off. However, it's Rosette's life that goes completely pear-shaped upon the chance meeting. However, although they end up being good friends, Yuuhi never loves her back, since he was already in love with The Heroine Aya. Although she has way more depth of character than the average MPDG (taking care of her sick younger brother and such), she tries to win over Yuuhi's heart with her child-like enthusiasm. Yuu Watase plays with this trope in Ceres, Celestial Legend with Chidori Kuruma.Despite all these changes, they still fall in love and get together. Then we see that this was their first and only encounter in almost twenty years, that Shiratori chased after another woman because he mistakenly thought she was said girl, and that "the girl" actually grew into a much more thoughtful and quiet person, the local Cool Teacher Kobayashi-sensei. The love of Inspector Shiratori's life is a strong-willed, outspoken girl whom he met when they were children, and her incredibly cheerful antics are what motivated him to become a policeman in the first place. In Brave10, Saizo is pretty much being dragged around by Isanami from their first meeting although she is sometimes more of a Manic Pixie Nightmare Girl. However, after he flat out tells her that he isn't in love with her and never will be, she becomes devoted to keeping Tsukushi and Domyouji together. In Boys over Flowers, Shigeru Ookawahara tried to be this to Domyouji, her arranged fiancé.Unfortunately, it is Yugo who died at the exact moment Alita dragged him out of his shell.
